At this 8th matchday in the Premier League, two names stand atop the scorers table: Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero.
Not coincidentally, their two teams, Chelsea and Manchester City, are atop the league table as well. In regards to the attackers, the two strikers have two very different but equally effective style. Aguero, the Argentinean fulcrum of the City attack, is known as one of the fastest players both in his position and in the premiership, which often comes in handy.
More evident over the weekend though, was his effectiveness inside the box. In the run of play, Aguero’s ability to curl his shots was present, unfortunately for Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris.
However, it was Aguero’s ability at the spot over the weekend that gained him half of his astounding four goals. This was only the second time in City history that a player scored four goals in a single EPL game, but that is beside the point.
The Argentine was repelled once by the French netminder, but the other two times Jon Moss signaled for a penalty, Aguero was able to knock it home en route to his team squashing the North London side 4-1. Diego Costa, on the other hand, uses a wholly different approach to make his mark on his games. In an act that is described by most pundits as displaying his love for the game, has a tendency to track back on defense and help out the likes of John Terry and Nemanja Matic.
Moreover, recalling the likes of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, the Spanish striker is seen by many as one of the best poachers in English soccer right now. With nine goals in eight games, it’s difficult to disagree with either of these strikers’ approaches to the beautiful game. As the competition between the two heats up, the larger war between their teams will only get more exhilarating as the season progresses.
Manuel Pellegrini exudes a sense of calm over his squad, and leads to a free flowing type of play that is beautiful to watch. On the opposite side, the Special One himself, Jose Mourinho, is considered to be one of the world’s greatest tacticians, and he certainly knows it.
While the striker battle between Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa is off to a rousing start, the war between their two clubs will be that much more intense.
