The X-Men series is losing its Mystique…well, at least the actress who currently portrays the character of Mystique.
Jennifer Lawrence, who has played the role of Raven Darkholme/Mystique since 2011’s X-Men: First Class, will not be appearing in the role again after her upcoming portrayal of the character in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
When Josh Horowitz from MTV News caught up with Lawrence on the red carpet at the premiere of her new movie, Serena, he asked if Apocalypse would be her last X-Men film. Lawrence gave a resounding affirmation of it being her final portrayal of Mystique when she said, “It is my last one, actually…yes.”
Recently Nicholas Hoult suggested that Apocalypse could also be his last appearance in the X-Men series, since the film marks the fulfillment of his contract with 20th Century Fox. According to E! Online, Hoult indicated that he would not be averse to appearing in future X-Men movies as Hank McCoy/Beast role when he said, “I have a good time playing him so I’d keep making them.”
With Lawrence confirming it’s her last portrayal of Mystique and Hoult being at the end of his contract, it begs two questions. First, who could be Lawrence’s possible replacement for the role of Mystique in future X-Men films? And second, will the studio ask Hoult to reprise his role or recast that part of Beast as well?
