Neill Blomkamp garnered plenty of attention after posting a slew of unofficial images and concept art for a new movie in Fox’s ALIEN franchise. The project seemed to be dead or at the very least in limbo, so Blomkamp may not have seriously expected anything to come from the image posts.

Earlier today Blomkamp took to Instagram to post another ALIEN image, but this time that image came with a bit of news.

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

It looks like the folks at 20th Century Fox took his actions very seriously – seriously enough to let him direct a new ALIEN film.

Variety reports that Sigourney Weaver was supposed to star in the ALIEN sequel/reboot, but it is no longer certain if she will have any involvement. Weaver worked with Blomkamp on his upcoming movie Chappie, giving Blomkamp ample time to grill Weaver about the franchise and the iconic character, Ripley.

Chronologically the events of this new ALIEN movie will happen years after the sequel for Prometheus. Both films will be produced by Ridley Scott, through his production company, Scott Free.

Does this mean that Prometheus 2 will segue into the next ALIEN movie? Or does will they be completely separate, thus leaving the possibility for a Promethus 3?

Certainly these questions and many others will be answered as these movie projects progress. As it stands, Prometheus 2 is scheduled for release March 4th of 2016.
