The Washington Redskins are about to do something more moronic than I have ever imagined they would do. They are about to give up on a quarterback, that has been the best QB that they have had in the last 20 years. Everyone knows that in this era of the NFL you need a competent QB. They have that in Kirk Cousins, so why not pay him?
Per reports from several outlets, including Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, a deal between the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers could be reached as early as next week at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine. This means that the Redskins are more than likely giving Kirk Cousins the Non-Exclusive franchise tag. That would allow him to negotiate a deal with another team. If the new team reaches an agreement, the Redskins can match or let him go for compensation.
The compensation is the tricky part. The typical compensation would be two first round draft picks. However, that can be negotiated to something else that the two sides have agreed upon. The Washington Redskins better not trade Cousins for less than a first-rounder. I have seen reports that include swapping of picks with the 49ers. Idiotic! I have also seen reports that include RB Carlos Hyde and the 34th pick. Again, idiotic!

The Washington Redskins have a good situation on offense. The upgrades are needed on the defensive side. Losing Cousins, or giving him away, would almost start the process over. This is something that the fans of the Redskins are not wanting to see. We have finally put together back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in forever.
If the Washington Redskins drop the ball and move on from Kirk Cousins it could be one of the most detrimental moves this franchise has made. It is not often you can have a QB the caliber of a Cousins come along. I know he is not Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, but he is a top 10 QB. In this era of the NFL, those guys get paid.
Everything at this point is just a rumor and until we hear different a rumor is just that.
Top 10? Seriously? He is a qb who is destine for mediocrity and i think that wash has been that at best long enough. You shouldn’t have to pay 24 mil a year for average. His stats are a testament to the talent and coaching around him hence why taking a shot to get a good qb now is paramount. Quit looking at just stats. Guys like you give Flynn, Cassel and others monster contacts that kill teams.
Justin,
While I can see your apprehension in why Cousins is not a Top 10 QB, sadly with the era of 5,000-yards and glorified FFL/Flag football we live in, Cousins will be PAID like one. Stats and analytics are why we are having this conversation today. Thanks for reading!
Justin,
Thanks for reading.
I honestly believe that Cousins can be a top 10 to 15 QB consistently. And I completely agree with Rob, in this day and age, teams will pay top dollar for a QB in that range. It is just they way the game has progressed right now.
Justin…AGREED, enough of these excuses for Cousins, he’s not a rookie. What you saw & seen is who he is, he doesn’t show up against average to above average to good defenses. He’s been spoon fed long enough, tag him and trade him…
I 10000000000000000% agree with you nuf said
Here’s a solution to fix the Redskins issues and become more of playoff contender for years to come. Redskins should do the opposite of what been doing in free agency and the draft. They have a history of giving of mutable draft picks for players that they didn’t get what they really needed from them. Redskins should trade Kurt Cousins to San Francisco for the #2 overall pick. That will Washington more Cap money and leverage in the draft. #1 they draft Leanard Fournett at 2 spot and at #17 pick on DL from Stanford or Michigan St.
Greg,
You have a point in reference to Washington’s history with draft picks. If they are unable to re-sign Cousins, I could actually make a case for your exact scenario happening, as this is a weak QB class, and Cousins is a top 15-ish QB. I’d personally take Cook or the best OL and the best DL/S/DE at 17 as this is a deep defensive class. Thanks for reading!

The issue has been their willingness to overpay high-priced free agents and not get a return. Over the past couple of years, they have drafted stronger than in years past. Sorry, but I do not agree with the trading of Cousins. They need stability at this position. That is something that they have not had since Dan Snyder has bought the team. Now they do!
They are morons. We all know that. Kirk is as good as gone. He won’t sign anything but a way above market contract. Why would he? He can force them to tag him again at $24 mill, then the niners or anyone else can sign him next year for no comp to Redskins. Sweet.
The deal that no one talks about but makes a ton of sense is to trade him to Houston for Osweiler and a couple of very high picks. Osweiler is terrible but without Cousins, so are the Skins, and it solves a huge problem for Houston, so they should do it. The Skins get picks and they have cap room for Osweiler’s deal, which is a lot cheaper than Cousins will get.
Kirk’s Agent,

I agree they could possibly become morons. The Redskins need Cousins but Cousins does not need the Redskins. If they do not re-sign him it will open, once again, the revolving door at the most sacred position in the game. Something that Redskins fans are used to seeing.
Not sure I agree with the Osweiler deal. I agree that they would suck with Osweiler but I am not sure they would suck without Cousins. It would truly depend on what they got to replace him. Osweiler and picks just does not make sense since the Texans are lower than Washington anyway.
I don’t think cousins is a top 10 QB, he is a product of the environment, between one of the best receiving corps and tight ends, plus having a very good pass blocking line is how he got where he is. Cousins goes to a team with only one good receiver and the rest mediocre, you will see that he isn’t worth nearly half what he wants. If Washington can keep the offense intacted, you could plug in a Ryan Fitzpatrick and still win. Tag cousins and trade him for more picks, they have way too many needs on defense.
Again I one Trillion% agree cousins is not all that & I’m a die hard Washington fan bleed burgundy gold & I’m NOT SOLD on Kirk can’t win big games cousins.. The thing is we were so bad for so long that anything that look anything like a QB we as fans was happy but once we started loosing with this so called good to average QB we get a first hand look @ what a mediocre QB looks like & its Kirk OVERRATED Cousins & we should not I mean we can not let the media dictate or future or pockets & ONE BIG THING we are all overlooking is Colts McCoy is good enough to do what kick do in this Offense he prove that in Dallas in a big game if I’m the GM let’s start there & get those 49ers draft picks & watch the 49ers be continue to suck with “Mr Franchise QB” Kirk Cousins
