Frisco RoughRiders: Previewing The Midland RockHounds

The Frisco RoughRiders, Double-A affiliate to the Texas Rangers, are hosting the Midland RockHounds. It’ll be a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics affiliate, all played at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. Currently, the RoughRiders sit at 15-21. They are last in the Texas League South, while the RockHounds are second in the division, with a record of 20-16.

The Midland RockHounds are starting two of the Oakland A’s top 30 prospects, in tonight’s matchup. Yairo Munoz will start at third base, and Max Schrock will be at second. These two rank at No. 12 and No. 18 for Oakland, according to MLB.com.

The RoughRiders have three of the top 30 prospects in today’s lineup. Jose Trevino will be the catcher, and Michael De Leon gets the nod at shortstop. They sit at No. 19 and No. 14 on the Texas Rangers top prospect list. Ariel Jurado will take the hill tonight, for the RoughRiders. This righty is ranked No. 6 within the Rangers organization.

Jurado comes in to the matchup at 2-3 on the season, carrying a 4.81 ERA. In his 39.1 total innings this season, Jurado has 24 strikeouts and 12 walks. He is posting a 1.53 WHIP. For the RockHounds, Grant Holmes will be the starting pitcher. He has a 2-2 record, with an ERA of 5.53. Both teams seem to be poised for a game with a lot of hits. Midland’s B.J. Boyd has the highest batting average in the Texas League, sitting at .360 so far this year. The RoughRiders leadoff batter, Jose Cardona, is ninth in batting average, coming into the matchup at .310. The lineups for each team are packed with homerun and RBI numbers. Each team’s roster features seven players with double-digit RBI counts. The RockHounds starting roster has 21 homers between the nine, while the RoughRiders have 19.

It should be an exciting performance by both clubs.

The RoughRiders are coming off a tough loss against the San Antonio Missions. The game went to extras, and saw 16 total innings of play. Frisco fell to the Missions, 4-3. The offense saw some production, which was a nice change of pace for the RoughRiders. In the previous outing against San Antonio, Missions pitcher Kyle Lloyd tossed a no-hitter. Frisco’s bats weren’t silent in their last outing, as phenom catcher Jose Trevino had a two-run single in the eighth. A dropped third strike scored Eric Aguilera, and the RoughRiders were able to tie the game.
