8 Mattress Myths You Should Ignore

You have probably heard so much concerning mattresses over the time. Well, most of what has gone into your ears are pure misconceptions. They might sound harmless, but be sure as day follows the night that they can interfere with your getting the most appropriate mattress, that suits or meets your needs. 1.    A pillow-top mattress is a must-have for comfort

Don’t be fooled! Yes, the pillow top mattress comes with some comfort, but it is not as necessary as people make it seem to be. What a pillowtop mattress does is to add a plush feel, which is something you can get if you pick the right mattress. The downside of the pillowtop mattress is that some manufacturers who lack integrity use it to sugar-coat the lack of genuine support or quality of a mattress: which tells you that you can easily get short-changed with this one. The top of the mattress is of least importance if you compare it with how the mattress has generally been engineered.

2.    You will need a hard mattress if you have a bad back

Lies! The harder the mattress, the better the support is a notion that you have to give a deaf ear. First of all, date back to your biology class. You will realize that the spine is curved. The idea of a hard mattress works with the perception that the spine is straight. Which is not true. When you insist on having a hard mattress to soothe your bad back, then you are very misled. Since your spine is curved, if you sleep on your side, then it only means that it will lack support. Which contradicts the myth. If you sleep on your side, then this type of mattress could be useful to some extent. If you are a back sleeper, then the hard mattress does nothing to make the situation bearable. Besides, your shoulders and hips need support too.

3.    A dense form equals a hard mattress foam

Some math or physics will do here. Remember that the calculations were the weight per unit volume. That means that the weight of a mattress is a major determinant of the density. The density of a form varies: that is, regarding its weight per cubic meter. What does that tell you? The density of a mattress has got merely anything to do with its hardness. The hardness is determined by how much the manufacturer compresses it. Therefore, it is important to note that a hard form may not be able to support your spine but a dense foam can do so by curving inwards when you exert pressure but also be able to retain its natural stature once you are out of bed.

4.    Mattresses cannot be cleaned

You’ve got to be kidding! You can’t sleep on a dust-infested mattress for years. It is not even healthy. You can always wash your mattress. Thanks to the invention of technology, you have limitless options on how to go about it. Any mattress regardless of the quality can be able to work with a vacuum cleaner. You can use it to get rid of loose dirt and dust. You also have the option to use a steam cleaner. However, you need to do it way before you use it. Also, to cut down on the frequency of having to clean your mattress, you can consider using a mattress protector. They come in different forms; the choice will be up to the type of comfort desire. It is easier to replace a mattress protector than it is to do a mattress.

5.    Having a box spring base is compulsory

You do not need a box spring base for your mattress to support you. A good mattress should be able to support you regardless.  Well, a box spring may be better than most of the bases but not that necessary. Manufacturers have come up with new ways of constructing the mattresses which call for no need of a base. The mattresses can give you all the support you need by themselves.

6.    A test at the showroom is all you need

A single test at the traditional brick-and-motor store is not enough. Which is why today, any person buying a new mattress is advised to source one from a dealer that has a return policy. A trial period of 30 days is enough for you to establish whether the mattress will be able to give you the kind of comfort you are looking for in the long run.

7.    Mattresses should always be rotated or flipped

You don’t have to flip and turn your mattress on a regular for it to be comfortable. Remember that not all mattresses are two-sided. Most are one side and therefore do not allow you to turn them. This, however, does not mean you should not turn them. The point is, it is not a necessity for all the mattresses in the market. Some do not need to. For mattresses that can be turned. It is advisable that you do it frequently in order for you to get the best performance from it. That is, in terms of comfort in the long run.

8.    Washing your sheets keeps dust mites away from your mattress

That is not the case. If you are allergic to dust mites, then it is something that you should be wary of. Your mattress is the ideal habitat for the dust mites, which means that they are not only hidden in the sheets. With that knowledge, more of steam cleaning would be advisable to keep them at bay completely. A mattress protector can also come in handy at this point. Be sure to get one that is washable though!
