While it is natural for cognitive decline and other issues to set in because of age, their effects can be overwhelming. A person who was independent yesterday now needs 24-hour home care assistance. It is even more daunting when loved ones are unable to step in due to geographical or work limitations. Home Care Advisory Group, whose personalized approach helps New Yorkers on Medicaid to find home care aides, explains that there are high-quality options for receiving round-the-clock care at home. Below, it is providing a primer on the options, including answers to commonly asked questions, in hopes that New Yorkers will be empowered to get the care their loved ones need.

There are two types of 24-hour home care.

First, note that “24-hour home care” can mean either a split shift, when home care attendants operate in 12-hour shifts every day, or live-in, when one home care attendant stays with the elderly patient for 24 hours.

Both have their pros and cons. With split shifts, an alert home care assistant will always be available. With live-in, there must be a place for the home care assistant to sleep. Remember, too, that 24-hour care is not provided. Instead, even though they are staying round-the-clock in the residence, they are really only performing (and billing) for roughly 13 hours of work each day. As expected, split-shift care is more costly than 24-hour care.

New Yorkers on Medicaid can get 24-hour home care, but it is not guaranteed.

First, the good news: Medicaid in New York does cover home care, including round-the-clock services. However, the “not so good” news is that because split-shifts are more expensive than the 24-hour option, providers may hesitate to approve them. Their availability is more on a case-by-case basis than an option that is guaranteed. Providers of 24-hour Medicaid home care include Certified Home Health Agencies (CHHAs) and Managed Long-Term Care Plans.

Remember the CDPAP as a solution for 24-hour home care for the elderly

The CDPAP, or Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, may be the right option for New Yorkers on Medicaid who are searching for 24-hour assistance at home. It allows consumers to select, employ, and manage their home care provider, who can include friends or family members. This person will also be paid and does not need to have specialized training or certifications to qualify.
