How to Improve Your Basketball Game

Basketball is an intensely competitive sport where bringing your best to every game is important. For serious players, adopting a comprehensive training program is necessary, however, some immediate improvements can be made with the following tips. Follow Dribbling Drills

Dribbling stands as the fundamental essence of the basketball movement. Every time you move about on the court, dribbling accompanies your motion. Deviating from this results in a violation known as “traveling,” a term likely familiar to you. Hence, all court movements originate from dribbling.

At-home dribbling exercises offer many opportunities for skill enhancement, with the cone dribble emerging as a preferred drill. Arrange orange cones or alternative obstacles in a line and go through them while dribbling. Gradually escalate the challenge by attempting the drill with two balls simultaneously.

Use the BEEFC Method

The BEEFC method involves shooting principles which are taught to novice players to refine shooting mechanics. Sticking to this mnemonic helps in perfecting shooting form:

  • Balance: Ensure even footing and centered balance before executing a shot.
  • Eyes: Maintain focus on the target/goal.
  • Elbow: Keep the shooting elbow tucked inward for good form.
  • Follow Through: Extend the shooting arm fully to complete the shooting motion.
  • Concentration: Maintain mental focus on the goal by imagining successful shot execution.

Consider Initiating Targeting Sooner

If you find yourself frequently missing shots, try implementing a simple adjustment: Begin targeting the basket a bit earlier. Avoid waiting until you are just a few steps away from the shooting range, as this might leave you unprepared when attempting the shot. You will have additional time to set up the shot and manage obstacles by initiating your targeting process sooner.

Other than this, maintaining readiness to shoot at all times is crucial. Failing to do so may necessitate a shift in focus as you approach the goal. This can potentially disrupt your rhythm. Instead, strive to sustain a general state of readiness throughout the game.

Adjust Your Shooting Arc

If most of your shots are rebounding off the rim, consider employing a helpful technique: adjusting your shooting arc. While accuracy is important in scoring points the arc also plays an important role.

Ever wondered why coaches emphasize extending your shooting arm after releasing the ball? This practice enhances control over the shot’s trajectory. It creates good shooting habits and increases accuracy.

The optimal shooting arc for a basketball shot is around 60 degrees. Even without a deep understanding of angles, remember that a 60-degree angle is slightly steeper than a diagonal angle. Your shot’s arc should ascend a bit higher than diagonal in relation to your current position before descending back down. Sticking to this angle reduces the margin of error, increasing your chances of successful shots.
