Captain America: Civil War was released on May 6th, 2016. That means it has been over a year since we last saw some of our favorite Marvel characters. And given how the film ended, there are certainly plenty of questions to be asked about those characters.
For those of you who did not see the film, Captain America dropped his shield and walked off after an intense battle with Tony Stark. Having not signed the Accords, he was deemed a fugitive of the law. Given his fight with Tony, plus the fact that he broke Hawkeye, Falcon, Scarlet Witch and Ant-Man out of the high-security underwater prison, the Raft, to end the film, that status did not change. Let’s add in the fact that he is also hiding Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier, who is also a wanted man, Steve Rogers might be the most wanted man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the moment.
So what exactly has Cap been up to in this past year? Plus, what will he be up to in the year to come, as we are not likely to see him again until Avengers: Infinity War comes out in May of 2018.
So officially, he was last seen in Wakanda. The only people who we know for a fact were aware of his presence in the advanced nation were T’Challa, better known as the Black Panther, and Bucky. But what about the rest of the former Avengers who are currently on the run from the law? Do they know where Cap is?
I would say Black Widow probably does not, as she likely went off hiding on her own. Falcon, who is Steve’s co-best friend along with Bucky likely knows, and could possibly be with him. And something tells me that Mr. Rogers also kept Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man and Hawkeye in the loop as well, just in case any of them needed him.
But the true question is, has he been lying completely low, or is he still out there serving justice? He unofficially gave up his mantle of Captain America when he walked away from his shield. Given his appearance on the Comic-Con poster for Avengers: Infinity War, where he is sporting a beard and a much darker looking suit.
But there is something important about that last statement. It does appear that Steve is, in fact, wearing some form of combat suit, which he would likely only need if he was still fighting crime. Which, if you are a fan of Steve Rogers, you would know makes perfect sense.
The reason Steve did not sign the Accords was that he did not want a governing body telling him which fights he could actually fight in. If he felt there was a threat, he wanted the freedom to do so on his own. So it simply would not be in his character to just disappear into the shadows.
We obviously have not heard about everything that has happened in the MCU in the last year. So a couple acts of vigilantism from the former Captain America would make perfect sense. He would likely do so very under the radar, with the beard and new suit to help keep his identity secret.
But there is no doubt in my mind that he has been out there doing good, despite being on the run. Steve Rogers is not a man that is scared to do what he feels is right. So just because we have not heard from him since Civil War, deep down we all know he is still doing his thing.
