Marvel Cinematic Universe: James Gunn Returning For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Is Best News You’ll Hear This Week

Marvel fans rejoice. The news we have all been waiting for has officially been confirmed. The man himself, James Gunn, has confirmed he will return to not only direct, but write Guardians of the Galaxy 3! You can read more on the announcement here.

Many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been awaiting this news ever since the second film was announced. While people had asked Gunn the question in the past, he would never give a concrete confirmation. But that all ended yesterday when Gunn made it official.

Guardians of The Galaxy emerged on the scene a few years back in 2014. Before its release, none of the characters were household names. You have a guy named Star-Lord as the team’s leader, played by an actor most known for a television role. Two of his partners were aliens named Gamora and Drax. And then there was a talking raccoon and living tree man.

In other words, the overall concept was odd for those going in blind. Yet, when fans left, they were clamoring for more. Not only was it considered one of the top films of the year, but it gave fans tons of new favorite characters. And that has a lot to do with Gunn.

It is not easy for a writer and director to turn a tree man who can say all of three words into such a beloved character. But that is exactly what James Gunn was able to do. Character progress is hands down one of his best attributes as not only a writer, but a director as well. The man simply knows how to get fans invested in his characters. That is no easy feat when you look at the character profiles before watching Guardians.

So with Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 fast approaching, fans have more of Gunn’s magic to look forward to. He is once again bringing his classic selection in music. He is also bringing back all of the fan favorite characters. And from what fans have seen in the trailers and commercials, things will be kept fresh.

Having Groot take on the Baby Groot persona was his idea. And weeks before the movie hits theaters, I can guarantee that was a fantastic move on the director’s part. He is also bringing a living planet to life in this new film. So if you thought a talking raccoon was crazy before the first film, just wait until we get to see Ego.

But to moral of this story is the fact that Gunn is perfect for the Guardians, as well as Marvel. With such a large over-arcing story, you need someone with vision. You need someone who knows how to fit all of the small puzzle pieces in to help tell the upcoming stories that may not even belong to you. And they need to do it while still making a quality stand alone film. Gunn has shown he is a man capable of all of these things.

His love for the characters in the first movie also oozes out on social media. You can tell he deeply cares what happens to them on the screen. As a result, I have complete faith that Volume two will be a total success. I also know that the third chapter is also in the best hands possible now.

The third film in any trilogy is always seen as the weak spot. But with Gunn now officially on board, I do not think that is necessarily going to be the case. If you had a different writer and director come in, then yes the third film would have lacked what the first one had and the second one is expected to; charisma and ingenuity.

When you have someone like Gunn who cares so much about his work, mistakes are going to be few and far between. His passion for the characters will help propel the third film’s story to a point where it will still feel fun and have folks caring about the main characters years after meeting them.

So if you are a Marvel fan, get excited. Not only is Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 only a few weeks away. But now the franchise’s third film is officially on the radar. And they have the right man behind the project to make sure it is another winner.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5th, 2017. You can get your tickets here.
