A little over a week ago the band Citizen Solider released their newest album titled Family Heirlooms.
After coming across a story about a former second grade teacher in Alabama. One of the songs from Family Heirlooms, “It Ends With Me,” fits perfectly for what happened to a boy which was recorded by a sibling and then posted on social media after it was sent to an older sibling who does not live in the house and thankfully resulted in police involvement.
Still for those who are unaware of what happened, a mother was enraged by her son. In a rage she yells in her son’s face, uses a belt on him 20 plus times and yanks him by the hair to pull him to his feet, and appears to hit him some more.
It speaks volumes that one of her sons who is 24 basically stated she did the same thing to him his “whole life.”
Not surprising there are some who have taken to social media who agree with what the mother did. Of course it is the typical statements like “my mom would break wooden spoons on my ass! and now I suffer from a chronic condition of called having respect.”
Someone else commented with “my mom waited until I got out of the tub with belts and I picked out my switches. These people crying about this being abuse are why society is soft and doomed.” Then of course a boomer like take with “good job mom. Wear out that butt. This world would be in a lot better shape if we got back to this as normal.”Lastly, one of the more disturbing ones was “Wait…He still had his pants and underwear on? 20 quick left hand weak swings??? Yea…. As a kid raised in the 70’s I’m just gonna stay quiet on this one. ”
Yet for those who have gone through it or are going through it hopefully will get the help needed. Listening to Citizen Soldier and “It Ends With Me” is also helpful as it has powerful relateable lyrics such as “my therapist knows your name and cycles you’re repeating. But you always deflect the blame, you’re scared to see me healing. I know the pain is in your DNA. Your parents did the things you do to me. But I’m running out of sympathy.”
This lyric also stands out “know your misery would love my company. But I’m better now from all the therapy. I’m burning down the family tree!”
Also, thankfully with this current generation corporal punishment is not as prevalent as it was in previous decades. Even better for them is having bands like Citizen Soldier around songs relating to mental health and how they are not alone in with what they are going through.
