Entering 2024, American businesses confront an evolving cybersecurity landscape fraught with escalating threats and challenges. This alarming rise in cyber threats, especially the dramatic 1,620% increase in zero-day attacks targeting unknown software vulnerabilities, underscores the urgent need for robust digital defense strategies.

Amidst these daunting challenges, ransomware attacks pose a significant threat, growing increasingly sophisticated and targeting critical sectors like aerospace, defense, and healthcare. Moreover, the surge in third-party attacks, notably within the healthcare sector, emphasizes the importance of collective efforts in cybersecurity, as seen in the collaboration with Cybeats for the Health-ISAC Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) Studio.

In response to this complex digital environment, U.S. companies are turning towards automation and AI, with over half expanding their use of these technologies in their cybersecurity arsenal. This trend mirrors the growing complexity of cyber threats and the necessity for advanced, effective protective measures.

At this critical juncture, Marcelo de Arruda and his firm, MDA Technology LLC, will emerge as vital allies for U.S. companies. The Brazilian native’s firm is planning to soon set up operations stateside to assist businesses of all sizes across the U.S. in recognizing and preparing for the constant cyber threats from both domestic and international actors. While large enterprises grapple with heightened risks of ransomware attacks, small businesses, despite budgetary constraints, also need robust cybersecurity solutions.

MDA Technology’s mission is to strengthen U.S. firms’ information security, focusing on preventing cyber attacks, invasions, and ransomware. The company offers comprehensive services like vulnerability scans, assessments, and the implementation of EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) systems, along with expert consultancy for compliance in audits across various standards.

It is here where Marcelo de Arruda views his cybersecurity mission as one where he aids large enterprises, particularly those more targeted in value rankings, face increased susceptibility to ransomware attacks. Conversely, de Arruda also plans to help small businesses whom also need to monitor their systems but may have budgetary constraints which prevent them from hiring large IT cybersecurity companies.

Marcelo de Arruda’s story, originating in Guarulhos, Brazil, is one of resilience and relentless problem-solving, shaped early by his keen interest in understanding how things work. His diverse professional experiences, from a local pastry shop to roles in a pharmacy and a television network, have honed his customer service, business operations, and technological skills.

Marcelo’s career at the television network proved pivotal, marking his foray into the world of computing and IT support. His adeptness with computers led to his appointment as the go-to person for computerization in the newsroom, transitioning from typewriters to computers. His initiative in setting up network communication and developing computer programs further showcased his technical prowess. After leaving the network in 1997, Marcelo joined SBT On Line as a systems analyst, delving into information security. His expertise in vulnerability analysis and incident response was soon recognized, as he assisted in internet-related investigations with the Civil Police. This experience paved the way for Marcelo’s entrepreneurial venture in 2000 when he started his own consultancy, simultaneously pursuing a degree in Computer Network Administration. His proactive approach was evident when he discovered a security vulnerability in his college’s website, leading to a scholarship and a five-year consulting role with the college post-graduation.

Marcelo’s professional trajectory continued to ascend as he joined EDS in 2001, specializing in information security for major industries. His commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement was reflected in obtaining the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification, a testament to his expertise in cybersecurity. Marcelo’s career took an international turn as he traveled to countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, and Chile, testing the security of client companies. His competence in cybersecurity was further highlighted during the 2020 pandemic when he effectively combatted a ransomware attack on a client’s company using the Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) system. Marcelo’s swift action in 2021 to avert a similar attack demonstrated his proficiency and foresight in cybersecurity, solidifying his reputation as a seasoned cybersecurity entrepreneur.

As we move forward, it’s clear that the realm of cybersecurity is becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, requiring businesses to stay vigilant and proactive in their defense strategies. Marcelo de Arruda’s efforts at integration of emerging technologies like AI, along with collaborative efforts among U.S. companies across different sectors, will be a positive impact in helping American firms in navigating and mitigating these cybersecurity challenges.
