Melatonin Sleeping Tablets in the UK
INSCMagazine: Get Social!

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced naturally by your body and controls your sleep patterns (that makes up our circadian rhythm). This is why many people refer to melatonin as the sleep hormone –  when your body produces higher levels of it, it can help you fall asleep. Melatonin levels can be impacted by a number of external factors such as light exposure (too much light before bed namely from our phone screens or tv!), alcohol, caffeine and stress. There are a number of natural ways to increase or improve melatonin production, however, many people are giving themselves a leg up by taking melatonin sleeping tablets before bed. By taking this melatonin supplement people find that they fall asleep more quickly and have a less interrupted sleep.

In this article, I wanted to focus on two things:

  1. What is melatonin and how does it help with sleep
  2. Since over here in the UK, you can only buy melatonin sleeping tablets with a prescription, what is a good alternative if you buy sleeping tablets online

What is melatonin and how does it work?

Melatonin is a central part of the body’s sleep-wake cycle which is part of our circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm is our body’s 24 hour internal clock where specific functions and processes take place depending on where they fall on our internal clock which is synchronised to our master clock – the brain. Our circadian rhythm ensures that our body’s processes are optimised throughout the day.  One of the most important of these is our sleep – wake cycle and so when our rhythms are properly aligned it can promote a more consistent, restorative sleep. When it is off schedule (for example jet lag or a different working schedule), it can create sleeping problems such as insomnia.

When melatonin is produced by the body it does not actually send you to sleep rather it lets your body know it’s time for bed so as to relax you and thus help you fall asleep. It is believed that melatonin may also deliver a number of other health benefits from its antioxidant properties for example helping with heartburn and eye health.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and then released into your bloodstream. As mentioned earlier, melatonin production is impacted by external indicators such as light meaning that melatonin levels start to rise when it’s dark outside (or reduce with too much light). This naturally indicates to your body that it’s time to bed indicating that it needs to relax. Melatonin also plays a role in this, binding with receptors around your body to instil calm (such as in your brain) and reducing levels of dopamine (a hormone that helps you stay awake).

Melatonin Sleeping Tablets

As said, many people have resorted to taking melatonin sleeping tablets to help with sleep particularly if your sleep body clock is forced out of its regular schedule – for example, you might be working night shifts or have jet lag from a long haul flight and returning from a different time zone.

However, sadly in the UK you cannot just buy melatonin sleeping tablets over the counter you need a prescription. So if you are buying sleeping tablets online or cannot get a prescription, here is a great alternative for you: the Paso Sleep Capsules. They contain a few natural alternatives that help with melatonin production: Griffonia Seed, L-Tryptophan and Montmorency Cherry. Not only that, they also contain a number of other natural ingredients that specifically help either get you to sleep, regulate your sleep and sleep more deeply. It’s the perfect night time blend. Try it out and let me know what you think!
