The mystery-thriller genre thrives on tension, secrets, and a palpable sense of place. When characters are confined, forced to confront both external threats and their own hidden truths, the drama intensifies. This is the world of 1980s Fort Lauderdale, where a shuttered beachfront hotel becomes a pressure cooker for a group of individuals on the run from their pasts.

Filmmaker Thom Mills captures this atmosphere in his new film, “LUDERDALE,” a story of trust, betrayal, and the fragile bonds that form in the face of danger. Acquired by Freestyle Digital Media for an October 21st release, the film explores what happens when outsiders and insiders collide. We spoke with Mills to discuss the central themes of the film and what audiences can expect from this chilling new thriller.

Q: Can you tell us the basic premise of your new film, “LUDERDALE”?

Thom Mills: The story is set in 1980 at a shuttered, beachfront hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. It begins when a young stranger mysteriously appears at the front door. Inside, two cousins are hiding out, on the run from gangland enemies who might have found them. Growing stress and boredom from being confined leads them to let the new arrival into their hidden world. What starts as deep mistrust evolves into an unlikely bond as they face threats from local drug dealers and mobsters, but secrets between them threaten to shatter everything.

Q: You’ve described the film as a story about “outsiders trying to find their way in and insiders trying to find their way out.” What does that mean in the context of these characters?

Thom Mills: That quote really gets to the heart of the characters’ motivations. You have a drifter, a lost soul, two mafia exiles, and a killer in pursuit—all these different people converging on one location. Each of them is trying to escape something or find something. Whatever direction they think they’re heading, their paths meet and lead to a twisting and chilling climax.

Q: Beyond the thrills, what are the central themes you explore in the film?

Thom Mills: Ultimately, “LUDERDALE” explores themes of fate, loyalty, and loss. It delves into the idea that maybe this chance encounter between the characters isn’t as random as it first appears. The story also raises the question of what it truly means to be family, especially when you’re bound together by dangerous circumstances rather than by blood.

Q: The setting of a closed hotel seems crucial. How does this sense of confinement impact the story?

Thom Mills: The hotel is central. The cousins live in this paradise but can’t experience it because they don’t dare go outside. That confinement creates a specific kind of pressure. The growing stress and boredom are the very reasons they take a risk and allow the stranger inside. It forces this trio to rely on each other, but it also amplifies the mistrust and secrets between them.

Q: Who is bringing “LUDERDALE” to audiences and when will they be able to see it?

Thom Mills: Freestyle Digital Media, which is the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, acquired the film. It will be available for audiences to rent or own on North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, and also on DVD, starting October 21, 2025.

Conclusion

Thom Mills’s “LUDERDALE” shapes up to be a compelling thriller, using its confined setting and 1980s aesthetic to explore timeless themes. The film promises a narrative where an unlikely bond between three strangers is the only defense against outside threats and internal secrets, questioning whether their meeting is fate or mere coincidence.

With its focus on fate, loyalty, and what it means to be family, “LUDERDALE” offers more than just suspense. As the story builds towards a “twisting and chilling climax,” audiences can look forward to a thoughtful and tense cinematic experience when the film releases across digital platforms and DVD this October.
