Most people who end up on Made in Chelsea get there through the usual routes — connections, a well-timed Instagram following, a friend who knows a producer. Freddy was born on 6 June 2003 at the Portland Hospital in London. His full name is Frederick Michael Hubert Knatchbull. His father is The Hon. Philip Knatchbull, who runs Curzon Cinemas, the UK’s leading independent cinema and film distribution company. His mother is Wendy Knatchbull. He has a younger brother named Rocky, who studies at the University of Edinburgh, and two half-sisters: Daisy, who founded the women’s tailoring brand The Deck and has built a serious name for herself on Savile Row, and Phoebe, who works in PR.
Before university, Freddy attended Radley College, the all-boys boarding school in Oxfordshire. He was accepted at Newcastle to study Politics. He left after a couple of terms. The modelling offer came first, and when Select Model Management scouted him on Oxford Street, he decided the sociology degree could wait — indefinitely, as it turned out. Freddy’s great-grandfather was Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. He led British forces against Japan in the Second World War. He was also a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, an uncle to the late Prince Philip, and someone who mentored a young Prince Charles so closely that Charles referred to him as “Uncle Dickie.” The man holidayed with the royal family regularly and moved through the upper echelons of 20th-century British public life for decades.
He was killed in August 1979 when the IRA planted a bomb on his boat, Shadow V, at his holiday home in Ireland.
Freddy’s grandmother was Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma — Lord Mountbatten’s elder daughter. His grandfather was John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne. Freddy’s uncle Norton is the current Earl Mountbatten, and the family home is Broadlands, a country estate in Hampshire that Freddy visits occasionally.
