Space Shot has always found a sweet spot between nostalgia and modern indie rock. Formed by longtime friends Jack Consolo and James Walton, the Massachusetts band takes inspiration from the sounds of the ’60s and ’70s, bringing expressive guitars, melodic basslines and plenty of energy into something distinctly their own.
Their new single “The Magic” puts that sound behind a love story that refuses to disappear.
The track follows someone who knows they should probably move on from a past relationship but can’t quite bring themselves to give up. Instead, they hold on to the belief that what they want could still be within reach. There’s heartbreak underneath it all, but “The Magic” isn’t interested in simply feeling sorry for itself.
Shimmering synths, driving basslines, big drum fills and guitar riffs push the song forward, giving that longing an almost cinematic quality. The result captures the strange optimism of unrequited love, when part of you knows better but another part is still convinced the story isn’t finished.
“The Magic” also continues a strong run for Space Shot following their second album, Someone Keeping The Lights On, and more recent releases, including “Blue Comet.” Their catalog has increasingly shown a band comfortable balancing energetic indie rock with more reflective storytelling, which has helped them build an audience through both streaming and live performances across New England.
With “The Magic,” Space Shot turns the inability to let go into something bright, energetic, and hopeful. Maybe moving on would be easier, but sometimes believing there’s still a little magic left is much more interesting.
