A well-built gas leaf blower should last ten to fifteen years. Most of them do not last five. The failures are almost never manufacturing defects, and they are almost never the engine wearing out. They are the predictable consequence of four or five habits, and every one of them is avoidable in under ten minutes a season.

1. Fuel is what kills small engines

This is the cause of the overwhelming majority of dead blowers, and it has a specific mechanism. Pump gasoline in Canada typically contains up to ten percent ethanol. Ethanol attracts water, and it degrades — in a small tank, meaningful breakdown starts in about thirty days. Left over a winter, the fuel separates, varnish forms, and the deposits settle into carburettor passages narrower than a human hair.

The result in April is a machine that will not start, or starts and will not hold an idle. The repair is a carburettor clean or rebuild, and it is entirely preventable. Two options work: run the tank dry before storage, or use ethanol-free fuel — including the pre-mixed canned fuel sold for two-stroke equipment, which stores for years without degrading. The canned fuel costs more per litre and is still cheaper than one carburettor rebuild.

On two-stroke machines, the mix ratio is not a suggestion. Too little oil and the piston scores. Too much and you foul plugs and build carbon. Mix in a marked container, not by eye, and mix only what you will use in a month.

2. Air filters are a five-minute job

A blower moves enormous volumes of air, and the air it draws in for combustion is full of the dust and leaf fragments it just kicked up. Filters load fast. A clogged filter makes the engine run rich, which costs power, wastes fuel, and builds carbon on the piston and exhaust port.

Check it every ten hours of use. Foam filters wash in soapy water, dry completely, and go back in — never install a damp one. Paper elements get tapped clean and replaced when they stop looking clean. This one habit prevents more power loss complaints than any other.

3. Spark plugs and spark arrestors

An annual spark plug replacement costs a few dollars and eliminates a whole class of hard-starting complaints. Check the gap against the manual rather than assuming a new plug is correct out of the box.

The spark arrestor screen in the muffler is the component almost nobody knows exists, and a clogged one produces symptoms that look exactly like serious engine trouble: sudden power loss, hard starting, stalling under load. It is a small mesh screen, it takes ten minutes to remove and clean with a wire brush, and cleaning it has rescued a large number of blowers whose owners had already decided they needed replacing.

4. Battery tools need storage discipline too

Cordless blowers avoid all the fuel problems and introduce one of their own. Lithium packs should not be stored fully charged or fully empty for months — roughly forty to sixty percent charge is where they age slowest. Store them indoors at room temperature, never in an unheated garage or shed, because both freezing and heat permanently reduce capacity. A pack stored at full charge in a cold garage over one winter can lose a noticeable share of its life for no reason at all.

5. Know when to stop and take it in

Cleaning a filter and changing a plug is homeowner work. Diagnosing a carburettor that has been rebuilt twice, chasing a fuel line that is drawing air, replacing a starter recoil spring, or resolving low compression is not — and on a machine still under warranty, an unauthorised repair attempt can void coverage entirely. A dealer-authorised small engine repair shop can usually tell you in one phone call whether a symptom is a ten-minute fix you can do yourself or a genuine failure, which is worth knowing before you take anything apart.

The five-minute end-of-season routine

Blow the machine down with compressed air, especially the cooling fins and the intake screen, because packed debris causes overheating. Wipe the housing. Deal with the fuel — dry tank or ethanol-free. Clean or replace the air filter. Store it indoors, off the concrete floor, away from anything that will sit on the cord or the harness.

That is under ten minutes once a year, and it is the difference between a blower that starts on the second pull every October for a decade and one that goes in the bin after four seasons.
