Football and energy-efficiency. They’re not two phrases that you would usually associate with each other, but perhaps you should. Professional sports events can create a huge unseen carbon footprint – from transporting thousands of fans to the stadium to lighting up night time-games, and even simple things like keeping the grass in top condition all require large amounts of energy and resources.
Luckily, many sporting venues have started to take notice of the effect they are having on the environment and are taking big steps to curtail their energy consumption, limit the amount of water they use, and minimize their impact on the environment.
With the 2018 World Cup taking place this month, UK-based energy company Eversmart Energy decided to research some of the most eco-conscious football stadiums in the world. The list includes enormous national arenas all the way down to tiny non-professional teams. From Brazil to Turkey, the USA to Ireland, here are 10 of the world’s greenest football stadiums.
