In the realm of dark fantasy, the most compelling stories are often those that blur the lines between good and evil, forcing both characters and readers to confront the profound consequences of their choices. These narratives plunge into the depths of morality, exploring epic conflicts where the stakes are not just worldly, but eternal. It is a genre that thrives on intricate world-building and characters who are as flawed as they are powerful.

Author J.R. Lightfoot (Bernard Lightfoot) masterfully navigates this territory in his latest release, “Retribution: Chronicles of Reaper, Book II.” The novel continues the saga of James, the Reaper of Souls, who is now stripped of his powers and forced to confront a past that haunts him. As a new demonic threat looms, James must navigate a celestial war where faith is tested, and redemption seems impossibly distant. We spoke with Bernard Lightfoot about the dark and epic journey at the heart of his new book.

Q: In “Retribution,” your protagonist Jaml is recovering from the Battle in Colley. How does this vulnerability change him as a character and shape his journey in this second installment?

Bernard Lightfoot: In the beginning of Retribution, Jaml has recovered from his physical wounds but his emotional wounds are still healing. The death and destruction that he witnessed and performed himself as left many new scars on his soul. As a Reaper, his life is one of servitude. He is a battle monk. He has no one to lean on, share his experiences. This vulnerability makes him calloused. He begins to see the evil in man. He begins to question why God makes so many sacrifices for man. His perception is changing, from his attitude towards the upper class to his dislike of Drac. His Adam/Eve outlook on life is fast becoming Cain/Abel.

Q: The title itself, “Retribution,” is very powerful. How does this theme play out in the novel, not just for Jaml, but within the larger conflict between Heaven and Hell?

Bernard Lightfoot: For Jaml, the concept of retribution is one place that evil resides, and he does not need to seek this. In the book, he battles against demons and monsters, seeking revenge for events that occur. He almost loses the battle and almost succumbs to revenge. In the end, it is the power of God that brings him back from the brink of darkness. As Christians, we battle Lucifer’s challenges every day. Some of those challenges are very personal and bite deep. As Christians, we have to always hold ourselves accountable and not seek retribution for actions taken against us. It is a constant battle in our faith walk and becomes a serious battle that could cost him his life.

Q: The book introduces a new and formidable demonic entity, Midos. What makes him a unique and compelling antagonist for Jaml, and what does he represent in the story’s exploration of evil?

Bernard Lightfoot: Midos is a fallen angel with an obsession with gold. Readers are introduced to his greed from the first chapter as he pours molten gold over a Reaper, making another gold stature. What makes him unique and formidable is he is driven by greed. He views humans as playthings and handles them the same way a toddler handles a doll. They are there for his amusement and quickly discarded once he is bored. Midos manipulates the kingdoms into war for his desires. What he represents is evil. Most people think of evil and doing bad things. True evil is treating others with contempt. Viewing others as nothing more than a means to an end. Step on someone just to satisfy one’s needs.

Q: The “Chronicles of Reaper” series is praised for its intricate world-building. What is your process for creating such a complex universe where spiritual warfare and human existence collide?

Bernard Lightfoot: This complex universe is nothing more than life itself. Every day we go through our lives, doing the best we can, making decisions that we hope are right. And yet we don’t know. If we are steadfast in our faith, we are protected, loved, and led. If we falter or fail in our faith, we fall to the whims of evil. This is where spiritual warfare occurs. Influences that lead to redemption or ones that leaves us exposed to the whims of Lucifer. We battle everyday with the spiritual warfare for our soul. The decisions we mentally and spiritually make exposes us to the love of God or the twisted whims of Lucifer. These spiritual battles are played out as physical battles in the book but we fight the same ones in our soul. This is a constant battle where we try to survive spiritually. Even the most steadfast Christians come out battered and bruised, sometimes the battle is so intense, we come out disfigured spiritually. That is what these battles represent. Jaml suffers, bleeds, and struggles just as we struggle everyday in our lives.

Q: Your novel is described as an “epic tale of faith, war, and redemption.” What is the central message or feeling you hope readers are left with after they finish this dark and intense story?

Bernard Lightfoot: Spiritually, I hope they can connect with Jaml and his struggles. They recognize the mirror that is their lives. I hope I can show them that whatever the battle, whatever the spiritual wounds, have faith and you can make it out. I want to also show that even the leaders of our faith are not above suffering or even death. Readers will find twists, turns, betrayals, and death from all directions. When they finish the book, they will know that whatever happens, however the amount of pain, keep your faith and God will bring you out.

Conclusion

The insights from Bernard Lightfoot reveal the profound depth and complexity behind “Retribution.” The novel is far more than a simple battle between good and evil; it is a character-driven exploration of what it means to be human (and inhuman) when faced with impossible choices. By stripping its hero of his power, the story forces a raw and honest confrontation with his past, making his quest for redemption all the more compelling.

This latest chapter in the “Chronicles of Reaper” saga promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans of dark and epic fantasy. It weaves a tale of spiritual warfare on a grand scale, anchored by the deeply personal struggle of a soul at a crossroads. Lightfoot’s intricate world and morally gray characters create a narrative that is both thrilling and thought-provoking, leaving readers to ponder the true nature of faith and the high cost of redemption.
