Currently enrolled at the University of Alberta, Donovan Burgmaier is pursuing a double major in Native Studies and Secondary Education with a focus in Biological Sciences. His choice of fields is as thoughtful as it is practical. Native Studies allows him to explore Indigenous culture and history—subjects that are deeply important in Canadian society—while Secondary Education enables him to turn that knowledge into action by becoming a teacher and future school leader. His specialization in biology further reflects his passion for science and his dedication to teaching subjects that encourage critical thinking and curiosity.
On top of his academic load, Donovan Burgmaier has made a name for himself as a committed athlete. From 2018 through 2022, he played as a defensive lineman for the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team. The physical demands of the sport are well-known, but what often goes unseen is the mental strength it takes to juggle university life and varsity-level competition. Donovan’s ability to maintain high standards both in the classroom and on the field speaks volumes about his resilience, discipline, and time management skills.
Even as a student-athlete, Donovan Burgmaier made time for service. He has been involved with organizations like Kids Kottage and Santa’s Anonymous for years, volunteering his time to help families and children in need. These experiences reflect his larger commitment to creating a positive impact in his community—whether it’s through distributing toys during the holidays or offering mentorship to at-risk youth.
Donovan’s volunteer work also includes advocacy through the VOICE program, a gender-based violence prevention initiative. When he’s not studying, volunteering, or coaching, Donovan Burgmaier works part-time at the Turf Training Centre in Edmonton. The role allows him to stay connected to athletics while continuing to serve others in a support capacity.
As he looks to the future, Donovan Burgmaier hopes to become a teacher and eventually a principal. His long-term goals also include opening an athletic gym, traveling the world, and owning multiple properties. These ambitions are fueled not by a desire for status, but by a deeper motivation to build lasting, positive impact for the people and communities around him.
