Every leaf blower on the market advertises two numbers. One is MPH — how fast the air leaves the nozzle. The other is CFM — how much air leaves it, in cubic feet per minute. Marketing departments have spent years training buyers to look at the first number, because it is easier to inflate. It is also, for most real jobs, the less important of the two.

What each number actually does

Think of MPH as the punch and CFM as the push. High air speed is what breaks debris loose — it lifts a wet leaf that has stuck itself to a driveway, or dislodges pine needles wedged in gravel. High air volume is what carries that debris somewhere useful once it is moving. A narrow, fast jet moves one leaf a long way. A wide, high-volume stream moves a hundred leaves ten feet, which is what actually clears a yard.

This is why the two numbers trade off against each other. Nozzle geometry sets the balance: narrow the outlet and MPH climbs while CFM falls; widen it and the reverse happens. The same engine, with two different nozzles, will produce two very different-looking spec sheets. When a manufacturer quotes a headline MPH figure, check whether it was measured with a concentrator nozzle fitted — very often it was, and the CFM figure was measured without one. The two numbers on the box may never occur simultaneously in real use.

The number that matters more

For general fall cleanup, CFM is the better predictor of how long the job takes. Volume is what lets you move a windrow of leaves across a lawn in one pass instead of three. Experienced landscapers buy on CFM almost exclusively and treat MPH as a secondary check.

MPH earns its keep in specific situations: wet leaves bonded to hard surfaces, debris in gravel or mulch beds, matted grass clippings, and anything frozen slightly to the ground. If those describe your property, do not ignore air speed — but treat it as the second filter, not the first.

Rough targets by property

  • Small lot, patios and walkways, dry debris: roughly 350–450 CFM is plenty. Anything more is weight you carry for no benefit.
  • Typical suburban lot with several mature trees: 450–600 CFM handles a heavy October drop without turning cleanup into an afternoon.
  • Large residential property, acreage, or wet-climate fall cleanup: 600–800 CFM. This is where handheld units start to feel underpowered and the backpack format begins to make sense.
  • Commercial crews and large-scale cleanup: 800 CFM and above, backpack only. At this tier the limiting factor is operator endurance, not the machine.

Newton force is the third number worth knowing, and it is the one professionals actually trust, because it combines air speed and volume into a single figure that cannot be gamed by swapping a nozzle. It is quoted less often on consumer units, but it appears consistently on the spec sheets for commercial-grade backpack leaf blowers, and comparing that one figure across brands tells you more in five seconds than an hour of cross-referencing CFM and MPH claims.

The specs nobody prints on the box

Weight is the specification that determines whether you finish the job. A handheld blower that weighs ten pounds is pleasant for fifteen minutes and miserable for an hour. If your cleanup regularly runs past forty-five minutes, the backpack format is not a luxury — it moves the load onto your hips and shoulders and roughly doubles how long you can work comfortably.

Sound rating deserves a look too, and not only for your neighbours. The difference between a 65-decibel unit and a 75-decibel unit is not ten percent — the decibel scale is logarithmic, so it is closer to double the perceived loudness. Lower-rated machines are also far more likely to stay legal as municipal noise by-laws tighten.

Finally: hold the machine before you buy it. Balance, trigger placement, and whether the cruise control lock sits where your thumb naturally rests are things no spec sheet captures, and they matter more over a season than any single airflow number.
