Cleveland, OH – The Cavaliers enter the 2026 off-season facing luxury tax pressure and massive identity questions.  To truly contend with the elite teams in the East, their front office needs to address three major areas:

1. Lock down Perimeter Defense – While Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen anchor a great interior defense, Cleveland’s backcourt is an absolute sieve.  The regular season exposed them to giving up an alarming number of uncontested three-pointers.  They drastically need a “3-and-D” wing or a backcourt ball-stopper who can take pressure off Donovan Mitchell and check opposing guards.

2. Roster and financial clarity:  (The Harden/Mitchell question) – with Cleveland sitting above the secondary luxury tax apron, the front office has to establish financial and roster clarity for their star backcourt.

*James Harden’s extension – Harden can
opt out of his contract this summer, per
League reports a multi-year extension hand
shake agreement is likely.  If Cleveland ties
themselves to an aging Harden long-term,
They must optimize the pieces around him
   to mask his defensive decline.

  *Donovan Mitchell status:  Mitchell’s
   extension eligible this offseason, while
Indications are that he may wait until
2027 to sign a maximum contract.
Cleveland must ensure the roster re-
   Main’s competitive enough to lock
   him down long-term.

3. Decide on the “Twin Towers” trade market  (Giannis Rumors):  Evan Mobley (the former Defensive Player of the Year) and Jarrett Allen are set to earn a combined $78.1 million next season, taking up a massive chunk of the cap.

*The Buzz:  Rumors connected Cleveland to
   a blockbuster pursuit of Milwaukee’s
   Giannis Antetokounmpo, with the Bucks
reportedly asking for Mobley and a
   mountain of draft picks.

   *The Strategy:  While team sources
indicate the Cavs have shown no
desire to trade the Mobley-Allen pairing
     can co-exist offensively.  If trading
Allen to a team in need of a center
(like the New Orleans Pelicans) is
necessary to balance out the roster.

4. Need Bench Depth via the 2026 NBA draft:
Cleveland’s bench was completely depleted during the Eastern Conference Finals, forcing Kenny Atkinson into an incredibly short and exhausted rotation.

*The Asset:  Holding the 29th overall pick
In the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, the
    Cavaliers must target an immediate
    impact, mature Collegiate player.

  *Draft Targets:  Prospects with strong
    Defensive upside and floor-spacing
    capabilities-such as Morez Johnson
    Jr. (Michigan) or wing-scorer Tounde
Yessouface (Baylor) – could give the
bench the rotation depth it starved
    for against New York.
