The 2026 WNBA Commissioner Cup is right around the corner! The sixth annual in-season tournament is officially scheduled to run from Monday, June 1 through Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with the championship game taking place on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
Here is everything a person needs to know about this year’s tournament structure, storyline, and schedule.
1. How the format works: With the league expanding to 15 teams this season (adding the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire), the play structure remains hyper-competitive.
• The game is over a 17-day window and
one designated cup in their respective
Conference.
• The breakdown is the Eastern Conference
Teams will play 5 games total, while
Western Conference teams will play
6 games total.
• Point differential matters because it’s
a short sprint “running up the score”
It is a viable strategy. Point differential
acts as the primary tiebreaker.
• The Finals: The team with the best
cup record in the East and the best
In the West will meet in the
Commissioner Cup Championship
on June 30. The host city is awarded
to whichever Conference finalist has
the higher overall regular season
winning percentage.
2. The prize poll and charity chosen:
• The money: Players are playing for
a massive $500,000 cash prize pool.
The winning team’s active roster takes
home roughly $30,000 per player,
The losing team gets $10,000 per
player, and the Cup MVP pockets
another $5,000.
• The cause: Every single game
matters for the community.
Teams select local charities of
the local charity of their choice
ahead of the tournament, and the
WNBA directs a financial donation
to those charities based on the out-
comes of each cup.
3. Key matchups to watch are: June 1 – Seattle Storm @ Dallas Wings. The tournament kicks off with the newly drafted rookie powerhouse the duo of Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers, who look to outpace the inaugural 2021 Cup Champion Storm.
On June 6 the Indiana Fever @ New York Liberty: The Indiana Fever enters as the defending 2025 Commissioner Cup Champions. Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston will travel to Brooklyn to test their skills against Breanna Stewart and a highly favored Liberty.
June 9 is the Dallas Wings @ Los Angeles Sparks, a highly anticipated rookie showcase featuring No. 1 pick Azzi Fudd going head-to-head with No. 2 pick Olivia Mike’s.
June 17, will be the Las Vegas Aces @ Phoenix Mercury: The final day of qualifying features an explosive rematch of opening night (where the Mercury blew out the Aces by 33 points). A’jay Wilson and Las Vegas will undoubtedly be seeking double revenge with a potential spot in the Cup Final on the line.
Past Cup Champions were: 2021 Seattle Storm, 2022 Las Vegas Aces, 2023 New York Liberty, 2024 Minnesota Lynx, and 2025 Indiana Fever.
Wonder who it will be this time.
