In a not so surprising announcement the Sharks center and team captain announced the end of his playing career. As he has not been able to fully recover from osteitis pubis, inflammation of the pubic symphysis. He said “unfortunately, due to my injury, I am no longer able to play hockey.”

Couture was one of the few draft picks that former Sharks general manager Doug Wilson got right. He was taken no.9 in the 2007 NHL Draft. By the age of 20 he made his debut.

Overall he played 933 games for San Jose. He scored 323 goals, assisted on 378 for a total of 701 points. Also, he scored 14 short-handed goals, 55 game-winning goals and 83 power play goals. Interestingly enough Couture first multi goal game of his career came in the playoffs against the Colorado Avalanche. The names of those who assisted on his goals will bring back good memories to Sharks fans.

On his first goal it was Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau. The second goal was assisted by Ryane Clowe and Devin Setoguchi. For Couture though it took some time before he picked up his first assist, which was in an overtime victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Clowe scored the goal, defensemen Jason Demers also picked up an assist.

Couture also said “I’m extremely grateful and proud to have played 16 years in the best league in the world. I want to thank the Sharks organization and all of my teammates over the course of my career. And most especially, thank you to the Sharks and hockey fans around the world for your continued support.”
