Ocean Cleanup

New York, NY – April 11, 2025 The Ocean Cleanup, the world’s leading force in large-scale ocean plastic removal, is gaining global momentum as it works toward an ambitious and inspiring mission: to eliminate 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution by the year 2040.

Since its founding in 2013 by inventor and visionary Boyan Slat, the organization has made enormous progress in turning bold ideas into tangible solutions. From large-scale deployments in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using System 002 to expanding Interceptor deployments in some of the world’s most polluted rivers, The Ocean Cleanup is now at the forefront of scalable environmental innovation.

“Our long-term mission is bold but achievable,” said Chris van der Vorm, spokesperson for The Ocean Cleanup. “By combining advanced technology, strategic partnerships, and global public support, we’re on track to make a lasting impact for generations to come.”

Recent milestones include:

  • 2 million+ kilograms of plastic removed from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
  • Deployment of Interceptor models in 10+ countries
  • Launch of Interceptor 006 and 007, optimized for different river types
  • A growing global supporter base funding future development and expansion

To scale their efforts, The Ocean Cleanup is also investing in System 03, the next-generation ocean cleanup system designed for greater collection efficiency. Testing and development are underway, with the goal of expanding cleanup operations across multiple gyres by 2030.

The organization invites individuals, businesses, governments, and media to follow their journey toward 2040 and become part of the solution through donations, partnerships, and awareness campaigns.
