In the serene town of Kodiak, Alaska, where mountains stand as symbols of strength and the ocean mirrors resilience, a story of compassion and purpose is quietly shaping lives. It is the story of Jhay Acierto — a Filipino immigrant, healthcare leader, and co-founder of Pillars of Care Assisted Living Home, LLC. His life exemplifies how perseverance, faith, and a heart for service can transform challenges into lifelong impact.
From Pampanga to Alaska: A Journey of Purpose
Born and raised in Magalang, Pampanga, Philippines, Jhay grew up in a large family of eleven siblings. Surrounded by hard work and unity, he learned early that true strength lies in service — in lifting others even while striving to build one’s own future. His upbringing in a culture rich with faith and family values shaped his compassionate worldview.
When he migrated to the United States, Jhay carried those values with him. Like many overseas Filipinos, he started modestly, working diligently while adapting to a new culture. Yet his vision was always bigger than himself: he wanted to create something meaningful — a space where compassion, dignity, and community care could flourish.
A Partnership Built on Love and Vision
Life’s path led Jhay to meet Maria Teresa Acierto, a woman whose quiet strength and dedication to care mirrored his own. Their meeting marked the beginning of both a personal and professional journey. United by shared values of compassion, family, and service, the couple built a life grounded in faith and perseverance.
Maria Teresa had also been deeply involved in the healthcare field, known for her professionalism and empathy toward those in need. Their mutual understanding of the struggles faced by individuals requiring specialized care — particularly those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) — inspired a shared calling. Together, they dreamed of creating a sanctuary where every person could live with dignity, safety, and love.
That shared dream would later grow into one of Kodiak’s most meaningful community-care initiatives.
Founding Pillars of Care: Building a Home of Hope
In 2025, Jhay Acierto, together with Maria Teresa Acierto and Miramor Garchitorena, co-founded Pillars of Care Assisted Living Home, LLC, located at 618 Lower Mill Bay Road, Kodiak, Alaska.
Officially launched on February 12, 2025, and licensed by the Alaska Department of Health on June 18, 2025, the facility celebrated its grand opening on August 16, 2025, marking a milestone in Alaska’s growing healthcare landscape.
The name “Pillars of Care” takes inspiration from Pillar Mountain, a landmark that watches over Kodiak — a symbol of strength, faith, and community. Its founders envisioned a place where those with complex medical or behavioral needs could receive professional care without losing their sense of individuality and dignity.
Under the Home and Community-Based Waiver Program, the facility offers a range of services: Residential Habilitation, Medication Assistance, Respite and Day Programs, Transportation, and Outdoor Activities. Every program is designed not only for care, but for connection — nurturing independence, self-worth, and belonging.
As Maria Teresa Acierto once said,
“Every person deserves to be seen, respected, and cared for — not for their condition, but for who they truly are.”
Leading with Compassion
Leadership, for Jhay, is not about hierarchy — it’s about responsibility. He believes that leading means serving first. Each decision at Pillars of Care is guided by empathy, patience, and a commitment to the people behind the mission: the residents, the families, and the staff who make the facility a home.
From a journalist’s perspective, this approach defines what true leadership looks like in community service — one that is rooted in humility rather than authority. It’s the quiet consistency of someone who shows up, listens deeply, and ensures every individual under his care is treated with compassion and respect.
The team at Pillars of Care often speaks of Jhay as a leader who leads by example. Whether it’s coordinating with healthcare professionals or ensuring that every room feels like home, his attention to detail is matched only by his warmth and sincerity.
The Strength of Partnership
The partnership between Jhay Acierto and Maria Teresa Acierto is a testament to what can be achieved when love and purpose align. Jhay oversees the operational and administrative framework, while Maria Teresa focuses on client care and staff development. Their complementary strengths have created a balance — one that ensures both excellence and empathy thrive within their facility.
Together, they embody the heart and soul of Pillars of Care. Their leadership extends beyond the organization, as they continue to mentor others, support community activities, and advocate for immigrant healthcare professionals in Alaska.
Recognition and Community Impact
The impact of Pillars of Care has not gone unnoticed. The Kodiak Daily Mirror featured the facility in its August 29, 2025 edition, highlighting its contribution to community welfare and healthcare accessibility in Kodiak. The feature praised how Filipino values of compassion, family, and faith shaped the foundation of this home, creating a model for inclusive care in Alaska.
Beyond professional recognition, the facility has become a space of comfort for families — a place where residents are treated not as patients, but as extended family. This human-centered philosophy is what continues to set the Aciertos apart as leaders of both compassion and action.
Reflections from a Journalist
As I reflect on Jhay Acierto’s journey, I’m reminded of how often the most powerful stories come from people who work quietly — without fanfare, without expectation of recognition. Theirs are stories of substance, of lives built on love and lived in service.
Three truths stand out from Jhay and Maria Teresa’s journey:
1.Leadership and love can coexist. When empathy drives decisions, leadership becomes an act of care.
2.Partnership is power. Their shared mission has multiplied their impact — proof that collaboration rooted in respect and trust can transform lives.
3.Service is success. Their story teaches that true success isn’t measured in titles or wealth, but in the number of lives made better through one’s work.
From a journalistic standpoint, their story carries a universal message — that in an often divided world, compassion remains our most unifying force.
Faith, Family, and the Future
Even as their story continues to unfold, Jhay and Maria Teresa Acierto remain grounded in the same faith and humility that carried them across continents. They continue to expand their programs, foster partnerships, and inspire others to follow their path of meaningful service.
Jhay once shared,
“We built Pillars of Care not as a business, but as a home — a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and loved.”
These words echo the heart of their mission. In every sense, the Aciertos have become pillars — not just of care, but of faith, perseverance, and compassion.
The Pillar Who Serves
From Pampanga to Kodiak, from humble beginnings to building a home that shelters hope, Jhay Acierto stands as a true servant leader. Alongside his wife Maria Teresa, he shows the world that the greatest legacies are born not from power, but from compassion — and that leadership is not measured by how high one stands, but by how deeply one serves.
“In a world that often celebrates the loudest voices,” as one colleague of his said,
“Jhay leads with quiet strength — and that’s what makes his story worth telling.”
