Snowhaus keep the momentum going with another release from their upcoming album, You Should Know Better, and “Cereal Killer” might be one of their most memorable yet. The Portland-based indie/punk project, led by Nate “Leo” Galloway, has built a name through years of DIY touring, catchy guitar work, and songs that balance humour with something a little heavier underneath.
That mix is all over “Cereal Killer.” It’s built around an angular, off-kilter guitar riff that feels instantly fun, the kind of part that sticks and gives the song its energy. At the same time, there’s a lot going on beneath the surface. The track pulls from real-life tension, inspired by a former housemate and bandmate from Snowhaus’ earlier days, living in a chaotic shared house.
Even though the song comes from conflict, it never feels bitter. It plays more like a “loving diss track,” shaped by relationships where people clash but still care for each other. Late nights, strange habits, and creative personalities all feed into the story, including the image of that same housemate regularly eating cereal in the kitchen at odd hours. It’s specific, a little surreal, and very Snowhaus.
Emotionally, the song sits in an interesting place. There’s confusion and frustration, but also humour and a sense of letting go. It touches on bigger themes too, like wasted potential and the ups and downs of being a creative person, but never gets too heavy. Instead, it wraps those ideas in something playful and easy to come back to.
As Snowhaus continue their monthly rollout, “Cereal Killer” shows another side of the project. It’s weird, personal, and doesn’t take itself too seriously, while still saying something real underneath.
