There is no question that Brock Purdy has found success with the San Francisco 49ers as their starting quarterback, which led to the trade of no.3 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys.

Still Purdy has more recently been compared to the legendary Tom Brady. Is it a fair one? No. The only similarities between the two is that one got picked in the sixth round and the other in the seventh as the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

For one Brady only made one appearance in his rookie season of 2000, in which he completed one pass for six yards. It was in year two when he got his opportunity to start early in the 2001 season as Drew Bledsoe suffered a season ending injury.

When it comes to Purdy he made some appearances, once when the 49ers were blown out by the Kansas City Chiefs and twice in kneel down situations. He completed four passes out of nine attempts for 66 yards. Then Jimmy Garoppolo suffered his season ending injury and he took over against the Miami Dolphins.

Purdy ended that game completing 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 33-17 victory. In his first career start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he was efficient completing 16 of 21 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-7 win. San Francsico won the remaining games he started in the regular season.

In the playoffs he impressed with wins over division rival the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys. Then bad news struck early in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he got hurt which resulted in a tear of his UCL, which required Tommy John surgery.

He recovered quickly and Kyle Shanahan named him the starting quarterback for the 2023 season. He then won his first five starts of the season before proving he was in fact human against a tremendous Cleveland Browns defense. Some throws he normally completes were missed and there were several drops including one by Brandon Aiyuk which likely changes the outcome of the game.

Overall against the Browns he completed only 12 passes on 27 attempts for 125 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Sunday’s loss was his first regular season loss that Purdy has started. So far in his career he is 10-1, completed 68 percent of his passes, thrown for 2,494 yards, 21 touchdowns and three interceptions.

When it comes to Brady he got his first 11 career starts in year two. The New England Patriots went 8-3, he completed 66 percent of his passes, threw for 2,254 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

His first career start was a 44-13 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in which he threw for 168 yards, start no.2 Brady once again did not throw a touchdown pass or an interception yet wound up with 86 yards while completing 12 of 24 passes in a 30-10 loss to the Dolphins. Against the San Diego Chargers he bounced back with 364 yards passing and two touchdowns in a 29-26 victory.

Other notable games for Brady in those starts as a two touchdown and four interception performance against the Denver Broncos in a 31-20 loss, threw for 107 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in a win over the Buffalo Bills, 185 yards a touchdown, and two interceptions against the St. Louis Rams in a 24-17 loss, and two interceptions in a 27-16 win over the Browns.

It is fair to say that Brady was inconsistent to start his career off, Purdy on the other hand has been much more consistent. From the win-loss record, completion percentage, touchdown to interception ratio, yardage, and yards per game the 49ers quarterback has been better.

So it is truly time to stop with the comparison. Using draft position to make it, is irrelevant.
